You may be familiar with Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify, and Tidal, especially since these services have been dominating music news headlines lately. With only a select few available in South Africa, and with none focussing on the diverse and popular Afrikaans market, we decided to build Liedjie – a dedicated music streaming service for Afrikaans artists and their fans.
Our aim: to showcase your music to the fans who matter – the fans who love you.
Who are we and how are we doing this?
Liedjie is the first stream in the NicheStreem stable. After the company and idea was registered in 2014, the founders of NicheStreem secured funding from local and international investors to build a scalable music streaming platform. Our back-end technology is powered by MediaNet – and our development, marketing and content teams are all proudly South African with a keen understanding of the wants and needs of the Afrikaans market.
What’s in it for you as a local artist?
- For starters, you and your peers are the stars of the show. Where most traditional streaming services feature upwards of 30 million tracks, Liedjie features a considerably smaller catalogue – one that contains only locally relevant content and expertly curated playlists. In other words, you are no longer competing against every Tom, Dick and Harry for a recognisable market share of streams. As royalties are paid out according to the popularity of content on the service, this is super important.
- As an artists you have your own dedicated playlists on Liedjie + your tracks are featured in our expertly curated catalogue. Our content team is continuously creating playlists for moods, occasions, activities, special days, festivals, events and so much more. Think braai, roadtrip, love, golden oldies, sokkie, top 20, rugby, cooking, even boere-orkes and children’s playlists!
- We believe in the value of music and as such we don’t have a free tier. After a two week trial period Liedjie will cost R49.99 per month.
- So how do you get paid? As an artist you are either representing yourself or you are represented by a label. The Liedjie team have reached out to almost all of the independent artists as well as the major labels and CAPASSO to ensure we have the most inclusive catalogue of Afrikaans content. Liedjie is committed to paying royalties to all the relevant right holders, i.e. labels, publishers, distributors and, through digital distributors or direct, to independent artists. These payouts are based on a pre-negotiated revenue share model and are determined by the popularity of the content on the service. In other words the more streams for your content on Liedjie, the more you get paid.
Can people listen to my music when they are not online?
Yes. Because of the cost of data and people’s sensitivity to data use, we have built functionality into the app that allows users to save their favourite playlists on their phones to listen when not connected to the internet. Rest assured that the music is secure and not transferable. When the user connects again the tracks played will be calculated and reported to our backend system for payout.
